Storytime.
Back in about 1986, my buddy was working at a place called the Magic Shop, which was a combination costume store and head shop. One day, a couple of roadies came in who were working the 38 Special concert that night , with Night Ranger opening. It was the last performance of the tour, and they wanted to do a gag on the NR singer. So t hey rented a nun costume, obviously . They they saw my friend’s bright read moped helmet. They asked if they could borrow it for the show. They gave him two tickets, two backstage passes, and said to come back to the bus before the show to lend it to them. Awesome!
So my buddy calls me up, and we head to the show. Get backstage, get to the bus, give the helmet, see the band, they’re all getting wasted , etc. Sit in the arena, watch the show, NR dude finishes Sister Christian and some lady walks out in the nun habit. Lots of laughs. Then it’s 38 Special. At the end of the show , the lights go out, and when they come back up, there’s Donnie Van Zant, center stage, with my buddy’s helmet on. Awesome! Then they hoist him up on a lift, and swing him out over the crowd, my buddy and I are hooting and hollering. T hey lower Van Zant back to the stage, he says, “Let’s go get drunk!” and he takes of my buddy’s helmet and rolls it into the crowd.
My buddy’s jaw drops. He’s speechless. Dead is the dream of an autographed helmet. We go backstage, but nobody knows anything, we don’t get the helmet (of course), we don’t get paid for it, nothing. And to top it off, we were too late to buy any more beer on the way home. It was a good concert though.
